Brett loved books. As a child, Brett loved to have books read to him. Book after book after book… Then, as an older child and teen, he read voraciously. Diary of a Wimpy Kid, the Warriors series, Percy Jackson, and Harry Potter were some of his favorites.
So, a book club in his honor – one that strives to build a love for reading in people of all ages is a must.
Brett’s Book Club for Elementary Schools
Goal: We are now accepting donations to begin the program during the 2025-2026 school year.
The more a child is read to, the greater the chance that the child will develop a love for reading books.
Have you ever had the chance to sit in front of a group of children and read a picture book to them? It’s a magical experience. The excitement generated by a small number of children who recognize the book spreads to the rest of the group. They react to the story and ask questions. And they excitedly answer yours. It’s an opportunity to bring the story to life for them and help draw them into a world of imagination. And you never know when that one special book or one special reader will hook a child on books for life.
We want to build on that type of experience.
Classes participating in our program receive:
- One book for the classroom teacher chosen from a selection of picture books that encourage children to spread their wings. This book can either become part of the classroom library or the school library. Teacher’s choice.
- A copy of the book for each child in the classroom. This book is theirs to keep and read with their family at home.
- Suggested enrichment activities that coincide with the story.
Our expectations:
- The teacher agrees to read the book to the whole class and do one of the enrichment activities. The reader can be the teacher or a special guest.
- The teacher agrees to write a brief assessment of the classroom activities and their reception by the students.

Brett’s Book Club for Adults
Goal: We are now accepting donations. Program begins in February 2026.
Brett wasn’t the only one in his family who loved to read. Join us for a monthly book club where different family, friends, and community members share their favorite books. The focus will be on books that helped us connect and grow in some way.
Community members will be encouraged not just to read the book, but to submit thoughts and questions to be discussed when the club meets online at the end of each month. A playback will be available for anyone who cannot make the club meeting.
Our goal is to create a community of book-loving individuals who come together over their love for reading but find inspiration and connection beyond the pages read. Like The Pen Pal Project, we’re going to start with the monthly book club meeting and see how the community evolves over time.
